Cast Iron Cookware Exposes “Stinking Thinking” About Food
It all started with my parents. Isn’t is always the parents fault? For example I was always told to clean my plate because there were children starving in China. Let me get this straight. I could overeat and thereby in some way help the starving children in China. It made sense to me.
To reinforce this message, my Mother’s solution to every problem was “Let’s eat”. So here are some of the rules I learned about eating:
1. Remove Temptation Quickly In the presence of foods that are fattening and not good for you, eat them immediately and thereby create a temptation free environment in your home.
2. Sleep Off Calories. So you just ate a french fried pygmy goat! No problem. Sleep off the calories and avoid bad after effects.
3. At large gatherings like family reunions, church socials, pot-luck dinners, eat the food quickly before the gluttons can get at it. Worm your way to the head of the line, take more than one plate if necessary and not only fill your plate(s) but graze as you go through the line. Ignore the comments from those in line behind.
4. Cancel the calories in coconut cream pie by using a sweetener in your coffee instead of that fattening sugar.

5. Fat Free can be the cheapest way to pack on pounds. Just the sound of “fat free” encourages us to eat more and thus get fat inexpensively or “fat free”.
6. Consume empty calories. Empty calories are those that do not count when you are counting calories. They include calories consumed while you are cooking, any time you eat standing up, calories consumed when no one is looking and while you are oblivious to you hand repeatedly going to the bowl of dip or snacks.
7. Avoid Salad Bars. If you do not believe that salad bars make people fat just take a look at all the fat people around salad bars. Just a thought.
Our recovering friends in 12 Step Programs remind us that “stinking thinking” is doing the same harmful action repeatedly each time thinking the outcome will be different.
The rules I learned in earlier years had to be “un-learned”. My journey has involved learning, not always successfully, to watch portions on my plate, to eat more slowly, chew my food more (some suggest 40 times), eat my veggies cooked in a cast iron skillet or dutch oven, control the environment in our home by eliminating sweets, chips, etc.
